Title: Physicochemical processes atop thunderstorms and their implications

Abstract:
Thunderstorms are the most efficient vertical transport mechanism that brings trace chemical species from the surface layer to upper troposphere/lower stratosphere (UTLS)— low pressure and low temperature—region of the atmosphere. While this statement seems to be intuitive, the true mechanism of this transport became clear only recently. In this talk, I will discuss how this transport works using ground-based, aircraft and satellite observations as well as numerical simulations by a physics-based thunderstorm model. I will use water substance (mainly water vapor and ice crystals) as the prime chemical tracer to illustrate this process.
Once entering the UTLS region, trace species may impact the global atmospheric processes (chemical, climate) greatly. For example, water vapor in the lower stratosphere may have great radiative forcing that influences the global surface temperature. At the same time, excessive water vapor in the stratosphere may cause ozone depletion. The scenario becomes even more complicated when the presence of aerosol particles are considered. The details of the physics and chemistry these important potential impacts are unclear and provide ample research opportunities.
