Dear Faculty/Staff/Students,

With pleasure, AS-TIGP would like to invite you to the 2014 AS-TIGP Distinguished Lecture – “My Nostalgia in Structural Biology: from DNA to Proteins” by Dr. Andrew H.J. Wang on Monday, August 25, 2014.

Prof. Wang is a Distinguished Research Fellow in the Institute of Biological Chemistry, and was the Academic Vice President at Academia Sinica from 2006 to 2011. He has been serving as the Distinguished Research Chair Professor at National Taiwan University since 2007. He was also a Professor at the University of Illinois-Urbana in the USA from 1992 to 2000.

He was born in Taiwan and received his B.E. and M.S. in Chemistry from National Taiwan University in 1967 and 1970. After obtaining his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Illinois-Urbana in 1974, he served six years as a Postdoctoral Research Associate, two years as a Research Scientist, three years as a Principal Research Scientist and three years as a Senior Research Scientist in the Department of Biology at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), in the USA.

Through his Ph.D. chemistry studies, he entered the structural world of bioactive small molecules such as antibiotics, natural products, and bio-inorganic compounds. Later he went to MIT to learn the competitive field of nucleic acids, particularly the structure of transfer RNA. By a fortunate stroke of serendipity he wandered into DNA structures, and discovered the new structure of the left-handed Z-DNA. His early interest in small molecule antibiotics also attracted him back to study drug-DNA complexes. Through the combination of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) and x-ray crystallography several interesting antibiotic-DNA complexes were analyzed.

When he returned to Taiwan in 2000, it was clear that in order to help the biotechnology industry, important protein drug targets needed to be the focus. Moreover, necessary infrastructures, particularly using high throughput strategies, have been integrated and established in Taiwan. Through those efforts, during the past fourteen years, he ventured into the studies of a number of important protein structures, covering from enzymes to membrane proteins for various diseases such as infectious diseases, cancers, and inflammation. In this lecture he will use some research examples, including the mechanism of biofilm, virulence factor, enzymes, antibodies, and DNA mimic proteins. In his lecture, Dr. Wang will also highlight the recent results of his adventurous journey in structural biology. We anticipate that this lecture will provide inspiration to our young scientists. Dr. Wang believes that we as scientists can assist in mitigating many problems that face us today, such as health, the aging society, environmental concerns, energy and agriculture.
