Dear all:
Prof. Brian K. Kobilka, one of the most eminent and respected chemists in America, is invited by K.T. Wang Bioorganic Chemistry Foundation and Academia Sinica to visit Taiwan as "2014 K.T. Wang Bioorganic Chemistry Lecturer" and will give 2 lectures entitled "Structural Insights into G Protein Coupled Receptor Signaling "on November 11th (Tue) and 12th (Wed). On November 11th right after Dr. Kobilka’s talk, we will also have Dr. Patrick Y. Yang to give a lecture entitled “The Challenges of Biotech Drug Research, Development and Manufacturing”. Lectures on November 11th will be delivered in the International Conference Hall, Humanities and Social Sciences Building, Academia Sinica. On November 12th, Dr. Kobilka’s lecture with the same title as the one on the 11th will be given in the Forum, GIS NTU Convention Center. The lectures are expected to provide local researchers with invaluable inspiration.
Dr. Brian Kent Kobilka is currently a professor in the departments of Molecular and Cellular Physiology at Stanford University School of Medicine. He is an American physiologist and a recipient of the 2012 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Dr. Robert Lefkowitz for his work on G protein-coupled receptors and also the co-founder of ConfometRx, a biotechnology company focusing on G protein-coupled receptors. He was named a member of the National Academy of Sciences in 2011. Dr. Kobilka’s research focuses on the structure and mechanism of action of G protein coupled receptors (GPCRs), which constitute the largest family of receptors for hormones and neurotransmitters in the human genome. GPCRs are the largest group of targets for new therapeutics for a very broad spectrum of diseases.
Dr. Patrick Y. Yang is CEO of Patrick Y. Yang, LLC, a consulting company specializing in biotech industry. He has over 35 years leadership experience in technology, manufacturing, supply chain, and operational management functions in General Electric, Merck, Genentech and Roche. He serves as Senior Advisor to the CEO of AstraZeneca; a member of Sanofi’s Biopharma advisory committee; and a member of advance manufacturing biotech advisory board for GSK. Dr. Yang is an independent board member of PharmaEssentia Corporation (Taiwan). He serves as a board director of the following U.S. public companies: Tesoro Corporation, a petroleum refinery and marketing firm; Codexis, Inc., an enzyme manufacturer; Celladon Corporation, a gene therapy company; and Amyris, Inc., a synthetic biology company.
You are cordially invited to share the valuable insights of those distinguished scientists. Online registration for lectures on November 11th is required and available at http://iao.sinica.edu.tw/. We are looking forward to seeing you in this lecture!
