Abstract:
The hydrogen negative ion H-, a three-body Coulombic system, is not only important in astrophysics, but also fundamental in understanding correlations between the two electrons [1]. Historically, this system has attracted great attention from many physicists, including Bethe, Chandrasekhar, and Herzberg. Even up to now, this system continues to be interesting [2]. In this talk I will first give a brief review about H-. I will then present our much improved determination of the energy eigenvalue of the metastable 2p2 3Pe state of H- and the new determination of the critical charge Zc of the same state, using highly correlated wave functions. As the nuclear charge Z is further reduced from Zc, a series of shape resonances are located for the first time with their corresponding positions and widths being determined precisely.
