Dear Faculty, Staff, and Students,
With great honor and pleasure, the TIGP Office would like to invite you to the 2015 TIGP Distinguished Lecture – “Principles Governing Biological Processes” by Prof. Carmay Lim on Friday, 11th September, 2015.
Prof. Lim is a Distinguished Research Fellow in the Institute of Biomedical Sciences at Academia Sinica, and a professor (joint appointment) in the Chemistry Department at National Tsing Hua University.
Prof. Carmay Lim received her B.Sc. in Chemistry with first class honors from Royal Holloway College at London University in the U.K. After obtaining her Ph.D. in Chemical Physics at the University of Minnesota (Minneapolis, U.S.) in 1984, she worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow at AT&T Bell Laboratories (Murray Hill, New Jersey), and as a Research Associate at Harvard University (Cambridge, Massachusetts). Before she was recruited to the Institute of Biomedical Sciences, Prof. Lim was an Assistant Professor at University of Toronto in the Departments of Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular and Medical Genetics.
Prof. Lim has received many outstanding awards such as the Outstanding Scholar Award from the Foundation for the Advancement of Outstanding Scholarship, the Ministry of Education 53rd Academic Award, the National Science Council Outstanding Scientist Award, the Human Frontier Science Program Research Award, and Academia Sinica Investigator Award. Prof. Lim has also received global honors, having served as Editorial Advisory Board Member of the Journal of the American Chemical Society and as Editorial Board Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry (Theoretical & Computational Chemistry book series). She is also Editorial Board Member of four other journals.
Prof. Lim has contributed to academic communication through more than 140 invited talks at international conferences and at academic and governmental institutions. She has trained 17 post-doctoral fellows, 6 Ph.D. students, and 8 M.S. students, who come from 16 countries including Armenia, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, India, Poland, Russia, Serbia, Sweden, Taiwan, Ukraine, U.K. and U.S.A.. Furthermore, Prof. Lim also sets an example of cooperative research via collaborations within academia (both locally and globally) and with governmental agencies and biotech companies.
In her lecture on 11th September, Prof. Lim will provide an overview of the drug development process and examples of how her lab’s research studies help to elucidate the mechanism of drug action, guide drug design, and identify novel drug targets. She will also provide an example of how scientists from various research backgrounds can contribute to solving important biological problems. Finally, she will discuss what it takes to be a successful scientist in the 21st century and summarize some key requirements. We anticipate her lecture will provide great inspiration to our young scientists!
