Dear all,
The EHS-CHEM team would like to inform you about an incident that occurred in the department building on the night of 7/3 (Mon). Unfortunately, a bottle of 2-butanethiol was accidentally broken by some students, resulting in the spread of its odor to the 5th to 7th floors. However, no one was harmed during this incident as the students involved followed the safety regulations diligently, including wearing goggles, lab coats, gloves, closed shoes, and long trousers. They immediately cleaned up the laboratory using chemical adsorbents to prevent further odor dispersion.
As the laboratory has recently welcomed several new members, we would like to stress the importance of adhering strictly to the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) regulations. Accidents are an inherent risk when conducting chemical research, and it is crucial that we take all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of ourselves and others. Always remember to wear all protective equipment without exception while conducting experiments and never carry out experiments alone. In the event of an accident that may impact other laboratories within the department, please make it a priority to post an announcement in the LINE group immediately.
In case of chemical spills, please refer to the Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for proper guidance and utilize the adsorbents available in the laboratory or the safety cabinets on each floor for decontamination purposes. If a chemical spill occurs on your body, it is essential to promptly wash the affected area using "Diphoterine" or "Hexafluorine" from the department's safety cabinet and seek medical attention without delay. Additionally, please ensure that both the Principal Investigator (PI) and the EHS personnel of the department are immediately notified regarding any accidents.
Let us prioritize safety and maintain a proactive approach to ensure a secure and productive research environment. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to the EHS-CHEM department.
Stay safe!
EHS-CHEM Team
