Dear all,
At approximately 18:40 on July 4th, three members of a laboratory on the third floor of Building A (all wearing lab coats, safety goggles, and gloves) were handling discarded black carbon nanoparticle samples. The powder may have been contaminated with highly reactive nanoscale metal catalysts, which likely caused it to ignite. The fire was promptly extinguished by a fire extinguisher. The safety officer later conducted an on-site inspection and confirmed that no visible flames remained. None of the three students were injured.
As a follow-up, the laboratory will reinforce safety protocols, including: storing such chemicals inside a glovebox and conducting all related experiments within the glovebox; ensuring that any waste materials of this type are sealed before removal; and following EHS center regulations for reporting and properly disposing of expired or special-category chemical waste to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
