Dear all,
At approximately 11:20 AM on August 12, 2026, the fire alarm was activated in the Chemistry Building due to an incident in the electrical room on the 5th floor of Building B. Department staff immediately inspected the location and identified smoke and sparks from the equipment. The university’s power distribution room was promptly requested to cut power to the building, and the fire department was notified simultaneously. Following the power cutoff, the sparks ceased and the situation was contained without further expansion.
In accordance with emergency response procedures, all personnel evacuated to the lawn in front of the Boya Teaching Building. Roll calls were conducted by each laboratory and reported to the incident commander. No injuries were reported, and the fire department preliminarily classified this as an isolated electrical incident.
Initial inspections by power distribution station staff and technicians determined that the issue was caused by a malfunction in a knife switch component. The affected electrical circuit has been isolated and powered off. The affected areas include select power circuits on the 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th floors, as well as the rooftop of Building B. Power to all other areas has been gradually restored.
Following further inspection of the damaged equipment, the vendor determined that re-energizing the circuit poses safety risks at this stage. Therefore, power in the aforementioned affected areas will temporarily remain suspended. The department has requested relevant units and technicians to arrange follow-up inspection and repair work as quickly as possible. The timeline for power restoration will be announced once the inspection results are finalized.
During the outage, faculty, staff, and students in the affected areas are kindly reminded not to operate electrical distribution equipment or attempt to restore power independently. Please closely monitor laboratory equipment, refrigeration/freezer units, and other instruments that require continuous power. If you have any urgent needs, please contact the Department Office.
We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your cooperation and understanding.
Sincerely,
Department of Chemistry, NTU
