| Abstract | Ion channels maintain cellular homeostasis and contribute to diverse human diseases. Their activity depends on both intrinsic protein properties and interactions with surrounding membrane lipids. Thermosensitive ion channels mediate responses to temperature changes, yet the mechanisms of temperature sensing and the contributions of membrane lipids remain poorly understood. Here, we investigate temperature sensing in SthK, a model ion channel from a thermophilic bacterium. Combining structural analysis using cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) with functional assays, we identify a lipid-dependent mechanism in which a salt bridge governs temperature sensitivity. These findings highlight how thermosensitivity can emerge from interactions between a channel protein and its surrounding membrane. Beyond temperature sensing, we reveal an unusual lipid-dependent interaction between positively charged residues that modulates SthK gating. Together, these studies highlight how membrane lipids regulate ion channel function by shaping molecular interactions within the protein. |

| Abstract | According to the Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle, vacuum is alive with Bosonic electromagnetic fluctuations of the electromagnetic field on the Planck scale. In presence of a photonic material with the electric ε and magnetic μ parameters the densities of vacuum states are modified by the Purcell effect dressing the local nearfield quantum atmosphere.1 The properties of the a quantum atmosphere can be further be dressed by application of an external field to cause local symmetry breaking. This is particularly interesting for creation of environments where the parity P and time T symmetries are broken, but the joint PT symmetry is preserved. Such atmospheres support the E∙B≠0 pseudoscalar fields, referred to as false chirality, where the polarizability θ couples to axion electrodynamics. The false chirality is distinct from the true chirality in that its complex Poynting vector S=Im[E×B*]≠0, implying that it is stationary, whereas for the P symmetric true chirality, Im[E⋅B*]=0. In other words, true chirality supports parallel electric and magnetic Aields that drive the magnetoelectric response in matter but cannot propagate electromagnetic Aield energy. We perform ultrafast nonlinear photoemission electron microscopy experiments on surface plasmon polariton fields at a silver-vacuum interface2 at 15 nm spatial and 50 attosecond precision temporal resolution. By geometry of the surface plasmon polariton generating structures, we tailor the spin-orbit interaction of light to generate structured topological plasmonic vortex fields that possess skyrmion and meron spin textures.3-5 We find that the plasmonic vortices host E∙B*≠0 pseudoscalar fields that persist on time scale of the generating optical fields, where the magnetoelectric density is focused on a deep sub-diffraction limited scale.6 We conclude that the plasmonic vortices host quantum atmospheres that support coupling to axion electrodynamics of topological, magnetoelectric, and cosmological character.7 [1] Q.-D.
