演講題目:Advancing Semiconductor Nanowires: from Chemical Synthesis to Biosensing Applications
【Abstract】
Semiconductor nanowires are ubiquitous in current nanotechnology research for electronic, optoelectronic, energy harvesting and biosensing applications. In this talk, we present recent advances made in our lab on the following two fundamental aspects of nanowire research: the mechanism of nanoparticle catalyzed synthesis and the response limit of nanowire field effect transistor (FET) biosensor. In the first part of the talk, we explore InAs nanowire growth with shape-controlled Au seed particles. In comparison to conventional spherical particles, the highly faceted, shaped Au particles are found to enhance the growth kinetics of InAs nanowires. Analysis of the nanowires by transmission electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectroscopy suggests that the surface faceting of the catalysts is preserved and a modified vapor-liquid-solid mechanism is needed to explain the enhanced growth rate. In the second part of the talk, we discuss the sensitivity limit and optimal operating modality of nanowire FET biosensor. I will use silicon nanowire FET based pH and cancer marker detection experiments to demonstrate that the subthreshold regime has the optimal sensitivity for nanowire biosensors and discuss the fundamental charge sensing limit of these novel nanoscale biosensors.
