【Abstract】

Quantum chemical study of the growing mechanism of (5,5) and (6,5)–chiral carbon nanotubes (CNTs) will be presented. The successive C2 additions to a half-fullerene C30, which can be a seed of both (5,5) CNTs and fullerenes, were examined, as well as the isomerization channels in the products. The reaction pathways from the CNT to the fullerene precursor were found at certain sizes, indicative of the possible CNT-fullerene transformation during the growth of the CNTs. Namely, only a minor part of the CNTs that survived the isomerization can yield the long tubes. On the other hand, we propose the “Near Arm Chair Travel Mechanism” for the growth of the (6,5) CNTs by the C2 additions to C31, where one of the five-membered rings at the edge of C30 is replaced by a six-membered ring.

【Abstract】

Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS) enables observation of analyte ions in terms of their molecular weights. Although sample preparation and operation of instruments are quite easy compared with other soft ionization methods, there are several drawbacks. In this study, we investigated desorption and ionization mechanisms by spectroscopic methods, and we developed useful techniques to overcome drawbacks in MALDI.
