演講題目：Consolidated Bioprocessing of Lignocellulosic Biomass for Producing both Biofuels and Biopolymers
【Abstract】
Renewable biomass utilization, while being the most prominent solution to the problem of global warming and energy crisis, cannot really achieve a true impact until its scale approaches that of the petroleum industry. The only prospect of scaling up production and consumption of alternative energy products to a meaningful level is by increasing its value to cost ratio close to that of petrochemicals. Such a notion is particularly challenging as the production yield and cost in petrochemical industry has been optimized over more than a century. In this project, we propose a biomass production strategy modeled after the footprints petrochemical production so that the biomass industry could in the near future accomplish the same magnitude of scale and cost efficiency of the energy industry. The major innovations, inspired by the success of the petroleum industry, are proposed here as: (a) utilization of all three biomass components, hemicelluloses, cellulose, and lignin to maximize products value, (b) cracking (i.e. catalytic conversion) of the three components into smaller oligomer ingredients, namely ethanol, cellulose nanorods, and monolignols, (c) recombination polymerization of the three basic ingredients into three classes of biomass products, advanced biofuel (ethanol and liganols), adhesives (liganols) as well as cellulose-based polymers (lignols, other ligands, and cellulose nanorods).
