Title: Scientific Case for a Seeded Free Electron Laser

Abstract:
Advances in accelerator technology have created the opportunity to construct a seeded free electron laser that is capable of producing highly intense, fully coherent, and ultrashort pulses at a high repetition rate and tunable in the 10 eV – 10 keV range. Such a facility, with characteristics orders of magnitude better than current synchrotron radiation sources, would revolutionize scientific studies in a number of areas including physics, chemistry, materials, and biological/medical sciences. It would enable diffraction, scattering, spectroscopic, and imaging measurements at sub-meV energy resolution, femtosecond time resolution, and nanometer spatial resolution over a wide range in reciprocal space. This talk will introduce the basics of seeded free electron lasers and the potential uses in solving outstanding scientific issues.
