Abstract: Many living systems possess an amazing ability to self-organize various structures without external guidance. Such self-organization, however, often requires specific biochemical stimulations. Here, we study whether cells can use mechanical forces alone to create long-range correlation in multicellular morphogenesis such as tubule formation. In contrast to the conventional thoughts that cells make decisions by chemical stimulations or by genetic programming, we show that a long-range morphological decision (~ 600 microns) can be made by mechanical forces alone. Such decision making process allows cells to self-organize long tubules at the organ scales (~ centimeters) without preexisting spatial cues from biochemical factors or scaffolds. These findings can be explained by simple physical models and provide a novel framework for the engineering of functional organs.
