Abstract:
Methane is the simplest and smallest hydrocarbon molecule, and an important task confronting catalytic chemists is how to realize direct conversion of methane to versatile fuels and valuable chemicals by building up the desired C–C (or C–O) bond. In the present talk, the attention will be paid mainly on the current progress of methane dehydro-aromatization over zeolite-supported molybdenum catalysts, which were initiated and have been developed in DICP since 1993. In recent years, this process has been intensively investigated, and a large number of catalyst components have been carefully screened. HMCM-22, a zeolite with a unique structure and dual pore systems, has been found to be a quite effective carrier for replacing the traditional HZSM-5 zeolite as a support for Mo species. The selectivity to light aromatics can reach 80% at a methane conversion of 10-12% at 700℃. Several special procedures for catalyst pretreatment have been developed, i.e. dealuminization of zeolites and alkali etching, which significantly improve the catalytic performance. In the meanwhile, the relevant fundamental research is mainly focused on determining the location of active Mo species, understanding the effects of channel structure and elucidating the overall reaction mechanisms, particularly, the formation mechanism of the first aromatics ring in the zeolitic channels. A direct observation of different types of molybdenum species on fresh and working Mo/zeolite catalysts by solid-state NMR is realized on an ultrahigh field NMR spectrometer. Coupling with the reaction data, it can be concluded that the exchanged Mo species are the active centers for the MDA reaction.
